Lancaster and Beyond
Lancaster
Our beautiful energetic city began life as a Roman settlement on the banks of the River Lune. With oodles of charm, it’s a real northern gem.
The medieval castle, dating back to the twelfth century, has connections with the rise and demise of the Lancashire witches in the seventeenth century. Well worth a visit – and guaranteed to cast its spell on you.
On a clear day (yes, we do get some) magnificent views of Morecambe Bay and beyond can be seen from the first floor viewing platform at the Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park, situated next to the Castle.
And the architecturally innovative Ruskin Library is worth a mention too. Opened in 1998 at a cost of £3million, it houses watercolours, books and photographs by John Ruskin - a grand idea for one of those rare rainy days.
Today, Lancaster is a hive of energy. History abounds and youth flourishes, not least in the cobbled alleyways that blend seamlessly with new and innovative architecture. Speciality shops rub shoulders with quaint museums, street theatre, festivals, tours and guided walks.
Whether downtown theatre or upstream boating on the canal, there are so many ways to step up the pace or sit back and watch the world go by.
And Beyond
For those who think the north’s only good for ferrets and flat caps, we believe Lancaster is a feather in ours…
Morecambe is only ten minutes away by car and the Lake District just half an hour away. We’re minutes away from J33 of the M6 and we don’t mind bragging shamelessly about our excellent rail links to both the north and south.
And with the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Beauty and The Trough of Bowland both less than an hour away, we know you’ll be seduced by all Lancaster has to offer.
Whether you’re a culture vulture enjoying a Lancaster City break or a countryside twitcher, it really is all right here on your doorstep.
